Saturday, August 30th, 2008

While the political leaders have loomed prominently on the world stage this week, in today’s reading (Luke 10-20), we find Jesus pronouncing woes on religious leaders. His expectation is that godly leaders

Tithe and attend to justice and the love of God
Don’t seek out significance
Do not burden people
Do not deaden other people’s souls
Hinder not the way to knowledge
Avoid defamation and persecution of the prophets

Today is also a benchmark for you. These 11 chapters of Luke bring you to
the end of your first week of reading the New Testament in 21 days.

New Testament Reading: Day 5/21

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

In clearing away the remaining parts of last Sunday’s paper, I happened to notice a wedding ceremony at the top of the Comics section. Paying closer attention, I observed the bride and groom looking at each other with “I promise.” In the background were loving parents echoing the “I promise” sentiments. The officiant, who resembled news anchor Walter Cronkite, had just announced what marriage is:

  • one of the most important obligations that any two people will ever swear to uphold.
  • a challenge
  • love
  • patience and giving and caring and faith
  • honesty and openness and thoughtfulness and truth
  • friendship and respect
  • willingness to accept your partner’s qualities, weak and strong
  • a promise made
  • a promise kept …again and again and again and again.
  • lynn johnston – for better or for worse

Jesus addresses the subject of marriage at the beginning of today’s bible reading. Apparently, divorce was also practiced during his time, and he clearly explains why. Compare his simple explanation to the points above.
